Translation
"Filled with fleeing Rakshasa women, children, and the elderly, and echoing with the clamor of people, the city seems to be crying out like a mountain cave."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जिसमें राक्षस स्त्रियां, बच्चे और बूढ़े (डर कर) भाग रहे हैं, जो लोगों के शोरगुल से भरी हुई है, वह (लंका पुरी) पर्वत की गुफा की तरह क्रंदन (रोती हुई सी) कर रही है।"
English Commentary
The Charanas describe the chaos vividly. The imagery of the city "crying out like a mountain cave" (krandantīva adrikandare) suggests that the screams of the fleeing women, children, and elderly are echoing against the Trikuta mountain, amplifying the sound of tragedy. This description validates Hanuman's earlier perception of total destruction. It paints the backdrop of absolute devastation against which the miracle of Sita's safety (which the Charanas are about to reveal in the next verse) will shine even brighter.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक लंका के विनाश का 'आंखों देखा हाल' है। चारण लंका की तुलना एक 'रोती हुई पर्वत कंदरा' से कर रहे हैं। आग की लपटों और धुएं के बीच भागते हुए असहाय लोग और उनकी चीख-पुकार (कोलाहल) का अत्यंत करुण और भयावह दृश्य प्रस्तुत किया गया है। यह दृश्य हनुमान जी के उस डर का कारण था (कि कहीं सीता भी इसमें न जल गयी हों), जिसे चारण अब शब्दों में पिरो रहे हैं। (अगले श्लोक में वे पुष्टि करेंगे कि इस विनाश के बीच जानकी सुरक्षित हैं)।
