Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एकवेणीधरा बाला रामदर्शनलालसा ।
उपवासपरिश्रान्ता जटिला मलिना कृशा ।

Ekaveṇīdharā bālā Rāmadarśanalālasā । Upavāsapariśrāntā jaṭilā malinā kṛśā । । ॥5-57-39॥
Translation
"She wears her hair in a single braid, she is delicate, and longs for the sight of Rama. She is exhausted from fasting, her hair is matted, she is covered in dust, and she is emaciated."
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे (शोक के कारण) एक वेणी धारण किए हुए हैं, सुकुमारी हैं, और श्री राम के दर्शन की लालसा रखती हैं। उपवास के कारण वे अत्यंत थकी हुई हैं, उनके बाल उलझे (जटा युक्त) हैं, वे मलिन (धूल-धूसरित) हैं और शरीर से अत्यंत दुर्बल हो गई हैं।
English Commentary
This verse creates a vivid and poignant image of the Viraha (separation) state, a classical trope in Indian poetics. The "single braid" (ekaveṇī) signifies a woman whose husband is away, indicating a suspension of all grooming and adornment. Being dirty, matted, and emaciated highlights her utter disregard for personal comfort in Rama's absence. By describing her as Rāmadarśanalālasā (longing to see Rama), Hanuman emphasizes that her physical deterioration is sustained only by her intense psychological hope, painting a picture of tragic devotion.

यह श्लोक 'विरह' (वियोग) की अवस्था का एक मार्मिक चित्रण है। 'एकवेणी' पति से वियोग में रहने वाली स्त्रियों का चिह्न है जो श्रृंगार का त्याग कर देती हैं। 'मलिन' और 'जटिला' शब्द यह बताते हैं कि उन्होंने अपने शरीर की सुध-बुध छोड़ दी है। 'उपवासपरिश्रान्ता' उनकी तपस्या और निष्ठा को दर्शाता है। हनुमान जी इन विशेषणों का उपयोग कर वानरों को यह महसूस कराना चाहते हैं कि सीता जी किस हद तक राम के प्रति समर्पित हैं और वे कितने कष्ट में हैं।
