विभीषणेनैवमुक्तो रावणः संदिदेश तान् ।
राक्षसानेतदेवास्य लाङ्गूलं दह्यतामिति ।

Vibhīṣaṇenaivamukto rāvaṇaḥ saṃdideśa tān . Rākṣasānetadevāsya lāṅgūlaṃ dahyatāmiti .. 5.58.149 .. ॥5-58-149॥
Translation
Being spoken to thus by Vibhishana, Ravana ordered those demons, saying, "Let his tail be burnt."
हिंदी अनुवाद
विभीषण के ऐसा कहने पर रावण ने उन राक्षसों को आदेश दिया कि "इसकी पूंछ ही जला दी जाए"।
English Commentary
Ravana accepts the alternative punishment and orders the burning of Hanuman's tail. He reasoned that for a monkey, the tail is a beloved ornament and a source of pride; losing it would be a supreme humiliation. Ravana intended to mock Rama and Sugriva by returning a disfigured envoy. However, this verse marks the turning point of the Sundara Kanda. Ravana’s arrogant command unwittingly handed Hanuman the very weapon (fire) he needed to complete his mission of assessing and damaging the city's fortifications.

विभीषण की बात मानकर रावण ने मृत्युदंड तो रद्द कर दिया, लेकिन वानरों के लिए उनकी पूंछ के महत्व को समझते हुए उसे जलाने का आदेश दिया। रावण का उद्देश्य हनुमान जी को अपमानित करके वापस भेजना था। उसे लगा कि बिना पूंछ का वानर अपने साथियों के बीच लज्जित होगा। लेकिन नियति का खेल देखिये, रावण का यही आदेश पूरी लंका के विनाश का कारण बना। हनुमान जी ने इस दंड को चुपचाप स्वीकार किया क्योंकि वे इसे एक अवसर के रूप में देख रहे थे।
