दहता च मया लङ्कां दग्धा सीता न संशयः ।
रामस्य हि महत् कार्यं मयेदं वितथीकृतम् ।

Dahatā ca mayā laṅkāṃ dagdhā sītā na saṃśayaḥ . Rāmasya hi mahat kāryaṃ mayedaṃ vitathīkṛtam .. 5.58.157 .. ॥5-58-157॥
Translation
While burning Lanka, I have undoubtedly burnt Sita as well. Indeed, this great task of Rama has been rendered futile by me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
लंका को जलाते हुए मेरे द्वारा निस्संदेह सीता भी जला दी गईं। राम का महान कार्य मैंने (अपनी मूर्खता से) विफल (व्यर्थ) कर दिया।
English Commentary
Hanuman blames himself entirely, thinking, "I have ruined Rama's mission." He concludes that Sita could not have survived the inferno he created. The phrase "Vitathikritam" (rendered futile/wasted) expresses his despair. He feels that all his efforts—crossing the ocean, finding her—are now meaningless because of one act of impulsiveness. This internal monologue highlights his extreme devotion; he cares less for his own safety or glory than for the successful completion of his master's work.

हनुमान जी आत्मग्लानि से भर जाते हैं। वे सोचते हैं कि लंका दहन तो एक छोटा कार्य था, असली कार्य तो सीता की सुधि लेना था। 'वितथीकृतम्' का अर्थ है 'व्यर्थ कर देना' या 'बिगाड़ देना'। वे स्वयं को अपराधी मानने लगते हैं कि वे राम के सेवक नहीं, बल्कि कार्य बिगाड़ने वाले बन गए। यह श्लोक साधक की उस अवस्था का भी प्रतीक है जब उत्साह में विवेक खो जाता है, और बाद में पछतावा होता है।
