ततः पश्याम्यहं देवीं सुरसां नागमातरम् ।
समुद्रमध्ये सा देवी वचनं मामभाषत ।

Tataḥ paśyāmyahaṃ devīṃ surasāṃ nāgamātaram । Samudramadhye sā devī vacanaṃ māmabhāṣata । । ॥5-58-21॥
Translation
Then, in the middle of the ocean, I saw the goddess Surasa, the Mother of Serpents. That goddess spoke these words to me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तत्पश्चात मैंने समुद्र के मध्य में नागों की माता देवी सुरसा को देखा। उस देवी ने मुझसे यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This marks the second obstacle in Hanuman's flight. While Mainaka represented temptation disguised as rest, Surasa represents a direct threat and a test of wit. She is introduced as the 'Mother of Nagas,' implying formidable power. Hanuman respectfully refers to her as 'Devi' (Goddess), acknowledging her divine status despite her threatening posture. This encounter was orchestrated by the Devas to test Hanuman's capability to overcome insurmountable odds through intellect.

यह हनुमान जी की यात्रा का दूसरा अवरोध है। मैनाक पर्वत 'विश्राम' और 'प्रलोभन' का प्रतीक था, जबकि सुरसा 'भय' और 'बुद्धि की परीक्षा' का प्रतीक है। सुरसा को 'नागमाता' कहा गया है, जो उनकी शक्ति और भयानक स्वरूप को दर्शाता है। समुद्र के बीचों-बीच अचानक उनका प्रकट होना हनुमान जी के धैर्य की परीक्षा थी। यहाँ 'देवी' शब्द का प्रयोग बताता है कि वे कोई साधारण राक्षसी नहीं, बल्कि एक दिव्य शक्ति थीं जो देवताओं की प्रेरणा से आई थीं।
