Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदेकवासःसंवीतां रजोध्वस्तशिरोरुहाम् ।
शोकसन्तापदीनाङ्गीं सीतां भर्तृहिते स्थिताम् ।
।
॥५-५८-५७॥
Tad-ekavāsaḥ-saṃvītāṃ rajo-dhvasta-śiroruhām । Śoka-santāpa-dīnāṅgīṃ sītāṃ bhartṛ-hite sthitām । । ॥5-58-57॥
Translation
She was wrapped in a single garment, and her hair was covered in dust. Her limbs were emaciated and miserable due to grief and burning sorrow, yet she remained steadfast, devoted solely to the welfare of her husband.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह केवल एक ही वस्त्र (साड़ी) में लिपटी हुई थीं। उनके केश (बाल) धूल से सने हुए थे। शोक और संताप से उनका शरीर दुर्बल और दयनीय हो गया था, फिर भी वह अपने पति (श्री राम) के हित-चिंतन में ही लीन थीं।
English Commentary
Hanuman describes the physically distressing condition of Sita to the gathered Vanaras. The phrase tad-ekavāsaḥ (wearing that single garment) implies she was still wearing the same saree she had on when she was abducted months ago, symbolizing her utter disregard for personal comfort and her state of constant mourning. Her hair, once beautifully adorned, was now matted with dust. However, the verse creates a powerful contrast between her physical frailty and her spiritual resolve. While her limbs were wasted away by grief (shoka) and burning mental agony (santapa), her focus remained unshaken. She is described as being fixed in the welfare of her husband (bhartṛ-hite sthitām). This indicates that her survival strategy was not self-preservation, but a meditative devotion where she lived solely for Rama, transcending her immediate physical suffering.

हनुमान जी वानरों को माता सीता की अवस्था का वर्णन करते हुए कहते हैं कि सीता जी की स्थिति अत्यंत करुण थी। 'तदेकवासः' का अर्थ है कि अपहरण के समय उन्होंने जो वस्त्र पहना था, वही वस्त्र अब तक उनके शरीर पर था, जो उनकी विवशता और तपस्या का प्रतीक है। उनके केशों में तेल या प्रसाधन का अभाव था, वे धूल से भरे थे, जो यह दर्शाता है कि उन्होंने अपने शरीर की सुध-बुध त्याग दी थी। यद्यपि शारीरिक रूप से वे 'दीनाङ्गी' (दुर्बल अंगों वाली) हो गई थीं, परंतु मानसिक रूप से 'भर्तृहिते स्थिताम्'—अर्थात् उनका मन निरंतर श्री राम के मंगल की कामना में ही स्थित था। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि सीता जी का शरीर लंका में अवश्य था, किंतु उनकी आत्मा और चेतना अयोध्या में श्री राम के चरणों में ही थी। उनकी यह पतिव्रता शक्ति ही थी जिसने उन्हें जीवित रखा था।
