तां दृष्ट्वा तादृशीं नारीं रामपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ।
तत्रैव शिंशुपावृक्षे पश्यन्नहमवस्थितः ।
।
॥५-५८-६१॥
Tāṃ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśīṃ nārīṃ rāma-patnīṃ yaśasvinīm । Tatraiva śiṃśupā-vṛkṣe paśyann-aham-avasthitaḥ । । ॥5-58-61॥
Translation
Seeing that illustrious wife of Rama in such a state, I remained stationed right there on the Shimshupa tree, watching her.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस यशस्विनी रामपत्नी को ऐसी (दयनीय) अवस्था में देखकर, मैं वहीं उस शिंशपा वृक्ष पर बैठा हुआ उन्हें देखता रहा।
English Commentary
Hanuman describes his tactical restraint. Upon recognizing the "illustrious" (yaśasvinīm) wife of Rama, his emotional impulse might have been to rush to her immediately. However, the contrast between her noble status and her wretched condition (tādṛśīṃ) shocked him. He chose to remain hidden in the Shimshupa tree (śiṃśupā-vṛkṣe avasthitaḥ). This demonstrates Hanuman’s wisdom as a spy. He needed to verify the surroundings, assess the threats, and understand the dynamics between Sita and her captors before revealing himself. acting impulsively could have endangered Sita further. This moment of observation allowed him to witness the subsequent interaction with Ravana, providing him with crucial intelligence about the deadline given to Sita.

हनुमान जी अपनी रणनीति बता रहे हैं। यद्यपि सीता जी को देखकर उनका मन दुख से भर गया था और वे तुरंत प्रकट होना चाहते होंगे, फिर भी उन्होंने संयम रखा। उन्हें 'रामपत्नीं' और 'यशस्विनीम्' कहकर हनुमान जी ने उनके गौरव को याद किया, जो उनकी वर्तमान 'तादृशीं' (ऐसी दयनीय) स्थिति के विपरीत था। 'पश्यन्नहमवस्थितः' (मैं देखता हुआ स्थित रहा) यह दर्शाता है कि हनुमान जी एक कुशल दूत और गुप्तचर हैं। उन्होंने तुरंत कूदकर दर्शन देने के बजाय, परिस्थिति का आकलन करना उचित समझा। वे देखना चाहते थे कि आगे क्या होता है, रावण का व्यवहार कैसा है और सीता जी की प्रतिक्रिया क्या होती है। यह धैर्य ही उनकी सफलता की कुंजी थी।
