ततो ऽहं परमोद्विग्नः स्वं रूपं प्रतिसंहरन् ।
अहं तु शिंशुपावृक्षे पक्षीव गहने स्थितः ।
।
॥५-५८-६३॥
Tato 'haṃ paramodvignaḥ svaṃ rūpaṃ pratisaṃharan । Ahaṃ tu śiṃśupā-vṛkṣe pakṣīva gahane sthitaḥ । । ॥5-58-63॥
Translation
Then, becoming highly agitated, I contracted my form and stayed hidden in the dense foliage of that Shimshupa tree like a bird.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब मैं अत्यंत उद्विग्न (चिंतित) हो गया और अपने रूप को छोटा (संकुचित) करके, उसी शिंशपा वृक्ष की घनी डालियों में पक्षी की भांति छिप गया।
English Commentary
Hearing the commotion, Hanuman feels paramodvignaḥ (great anxiety/agitation), fearing detection which would jeopardize his mission. He immediately employs his supernatural ability (siddhi) to alter his size, described here as svaṃ rūpaṃ pratisaṃharan (withdrawing/contracting his form). He shrinks his massive physique to blend into the environment. The simile pakṣīva (like a bird) in the gahane (dense foliage) illustrates his camouflage. He didn't just hide behind the tree; he became part of the tree's ecosystem, small and inconspicuous. This shows Hanuman's prudence; despite his immense strength, he chooses stealth over confrontation at this specific moment to ensure he can witness the events unfolding without intervening prematurely.

रावण के आगमन की आहट पाकर हनुमान जी 'परमोद्विग्नः' (अत्यंत चिंतित) हो गए—अपने लिए नहीं, बल्कि इस डर से कि कहीं वह देखा न जाए और कार्य बिगड़ न जाए। यहाँ हनुमान जी की अष्टसिद्धियों में से एक 'लणिमा' (छोटा रूप धरने की शक्ति) का प्रयोग दिखता है। उन्होंने 'स्वं रूपं प्रतिसंहरन्'—अपने विशाल वानर शरीर को सिकोड़ लिया। उपमा 'पक्षीव' (पक्षी की तरह) बहुत सुंदर है; जैसे एक पक्षी घने पत्तों में अदृश्य हो जाता है, वैसे ही महाबली हनुमान पत्तों में विलीन हो गए। यह श्लोक उनकी विनम्रता और कार्यसिद्धि के लिए अहंकार-त्याग को भी दर्शाता है। शक्ति होते हुए भी, समय की मांग छिपने की थी, युद्ध करने की नहीं।
