तद् दृष्ट्वा ऽथ वरारोहा सीता रक्षोमहाबलम् ।
सङ्कुच्योरू स्तनौ पीनौ बाहुभ्यां परिरभ्य च ।
।
॥५-५८-६५॥
Tad dṛṣṭvā 'tha varārohā sītā rakṣo-mahābalam । Saṅkucyorū stanau pīnau bāhubhyāṃ parirabhya ca । । ॥5-58-65॥
Translation
Seeing that mighty demon, Sita, of beautiful hips, huddled out of fear, covering her thighs and hugging her full breasts with her arms.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस महाबली राक्षस को देखकर, सुंदर अंगों वाली सीता ने भय से सिकुड़कर अपनी जांघों को सटा लिया और अपनी भुजाओं से अपने स्तनों को ढक लिया।
English Commentary
This verse vividly captures Sita’s physical reaction to Ravana’s presence: a mixture of terror and modesty. Upon seeing the rakṣo-mahābalam (mighty demon), she instinctively attempts to make herself smaller. The description of her covering her thighs and crossing her arms over her breasts (bāhubhyāṃ parirabhya) is a defensive posture. She is trying to shield her body from Ravana’s lustful gaze. The term varārohā (one with beautiful hips/excellent structure) is used ironically here; her beauty is what attracted the monster, and now she tries to hide it. It illustrates the vulnerability of a woman attempting to preserve her dignity in the presence of her violator. Her body language screams rejection and the desire to be invisible to him.

यह श्लोक सीता जी की लज्जा, भय और शील का अत्यंत मार्मिक चित्रण है। रावण को देखते ही उनकी प्रतिक्रिया किसी वीरांगना की तरह ललकारने की नहीं, बल्कि एक सती-साध्वी स्त्री की तरह अपने शील की रक्षा करने की थी। 'सङ्कुच्योरू' (जांघों को सिकोड़कर) और बांहों से शरीर को ढकना यह दर्शाता है कि वह रावण की कामुक दृष्टि से स्वयं को बचाना चाहती थीं। रावण की उपस्थिति ही उनके लिए अपमानजनक थी। 'वरारोहा' (सुंदर अंगों वाली) विशेषण यहाँ यह याद दिलाने के लिए है कि उनकी सुंदरता ही उनके कष्ट का कारण बनी थी, जिसे वह अब छिपाने का प्रयास कर रही थीं। यह उनकी पवित्रता और रावण के प्रति उनकी घृणा को शारीरिक भाषा (body language) के माध्यम से व्यक्त करता है।
