मुदित प्रमदा रत्नम् राक्षस इन्द्र निवेशनम् ।
वर आभरण निर्ह्रादैः समुद्र स्वन निह्स्वनम् ॥५-६-१०॥
Mudita pramadā ratnam rākṣasa indra niveśanam । Vara ābharaṇa nirhrādaiḥ samudra svana nihsvanam ॥ ॥5-6-10॥
Translation
The abode of the King of Rakshasas was filled with joyous, gem-like women. Due to the jingling sounds of their excellent ornaments, a deep sound resonating like the roaring of the ocean echoed there.

राक्षसराज रावण का वह भवन प्रसन्नचित्त श्रेष्ठ नारियों से भरा हुआ था। श्रेष्ठ आभूषणों की झनकार से वहां समुद्र की गर्जना जैसी गंभीर ध्वनि गूंज रही थी।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a powerful auditory metaphor in this verse to describe the scale of opulence in Ravana's palace. The tinkling of jewelry worn by the women is not described as delicate, but rather as samudra svana—the roar of the ocean. This suggests an overwhelming abundance; the sheer number of women and the heaviness of their gold and gem-studded ornaments created a continuous, deep resonance similar to the sea. The women are described as mudita (joyous), indicating an atmosphere of revelry and unbridled pleasure. For Hanuman, a strict celibate (Brahmachari), witnessing this ocean of materialism and sensory indulgence provided a stark contrast to the ascetic life of Rama, emphasizing the difference between Dharma (righteousness) and Kama (desire).

यह श्लोक रावण के अन्तःपुर की ध्वनि-योजना का अद्भुत वर्णन करता है। महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने यहाँ उपमा अलंकार का सुंदर प्रयोग किया है। स्त्रियों के आभूषणों की सामूहिक ध्वनि की तुलना 'समुद्र स्वन' (समुद्र की गर्जना) से की गई है। यह दर्शाता है कि वहां इतनी अधिक संख्या में स्त्रियाँ थीं और वे इतने भारी और कीमती आभूषण पहने हुए थीं कि उनके चलने-फिरने से उत्पन्न ध्वनि एक निरंतर गंभीर नाद बन गई थी। 'मुदित' शब्द इंगित करता है कि वे स्त्रियाँ वहां प्रसन्न थीं या मदिरा और विलास में मग्न थीं, जो लंका के नैतिक पतन और भौतिकवादी सुखों की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाता है। यह ध्वनि हनुमान जी के लिए एक चेतावनी भी थी और लंका के वैभव का प्रमाण भी, जिसे वे शांत भाव से देख रहे थे।
