कुलीनान् रूप सम्पन्नान् गजान् पर गज आरुजान् ।
निष्ठितान् गज शिखायाम् ऐरावत समान् युधि ॥५-६-३२॥
Kulīnān rūpa sampannān gajān para gaja ārujān । Niṣṭhitān gaja śikhāyām airāvata samān yudhi ॥ ॥5-6-32॥
Translation
(He saw) elephants of noble breed and perfect form, capable of crushing enemy elephants. They were well-trained in the art of elephant warfare and were equal to Airavata (Indra's elephant) in battle.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उन्होंने) अच्छी नस्ल (कुलीन) और सुंदर रूप वाले हाथियों को देखा, जो शत्रु के हाथियों का मर्दन करने वाले (परगजारुजान्) थे। वे हाथी-शिक्षा (प्रशिक्षण) में निपुण थे और युद्ध में इंद्र के हाथी ऐरावत के समान थे।
English Commentary
Hanuman assesses Ravana's elephant corps, the heavy infantry of ancient warfare. They are described as Kulīnān (pedigreed/noble lineage) and Rūpa sampannān (endowed with beauty/perfect formation), indicating they were prime specimens, not random captures. Their lethality is emphasized by para gaja ārujān (breakers/crushers of enemy elephants). Crucially, they were niṣṭhitān gaja śikhāyām—experts or fully trained in the science of elephants (training commands, war maneuvers). The comparison to Airavata (Indra's celestial elephant) is the highest praise possible for an elephant, suggesting divine strength and size. Hanuman notes that Ravana possesses a terrifyingly competent armored division, posing a significant threat to any invader.

घोड़ों के बाद अब हाथियों का वर्णन है। 'कुलीनान्' का अर्थ है उच्च वंश या नस्ल के हाथी (जैसे भद्र जाति के)। 'रूप सम्पन्नान्' का अर्थ है वे शारीरिक रूप से त्रुटिहीन और विशाल थे। उनकी सबसे बड़ी विशेषता थी 'परगजारुजान्'—वे शत्रु के हाथियों को कुचलने में सक्षम थे, जो उन्हें जीवित टैंक (Living Tanks) बनाता है। 'गजशिक्षायाम् निष्ठितान्' बताता है कि वे जंगली नहीं, बल्कि युद्धकला में अत्यंत प्रशिक्षित थे। उनकी तुलना 'ऐरावत' से करना यह सिद्ध करता है कि रावण ने स्वर्ग को लूटकर वहां की सर्वोत्तम संपदा और पशुओं को लंका में इकट्ठा कर लिया था। हनुमान जी देख रहे हैं कि यदि युद्ध हुआ, तो वानरों को इन पहाड़ जैसे हाथियों से भिड़ना होगा।
