Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पाणिभिर्निहताः केचित् केचिज्जानुभिराहताः ।
प्रकृष्टाश्च यथाकामं देवमार्गं च दर्शिताः ।
।
॥५-६३-९॥
Pāṇibhirnihatāḥ kecit kecijjānubhirāhatāḥ । Prakṛṣṭāśca yathākāmaṃ devamārgaṃ ca darśitāḥ । । ॥5-63-9॥
Translation
"Some were struck with hands, others hit with knees; they were dragged around at will and shown the path of the gods (thrown into the air)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"कुछ (रक्षकों) को थप्पड़ों से मारा गया, कुछ को घुटनों की ठोकर से पीटा गया। उन्हें मनमाने ढंग से घसीटा गया और देवमार्ग (आकाश) दिखा दिया गया (हवा में उछाल दिया गया)।"
English Commentary
This verse specifically describes the methods of assault: slapping, kneeing, and dragging. The phrase 'shown the path of the gods' (devamargam darshitah) is a poetic yet brutal way of saying the guards were tossed high into the air. This imagery highlights the superhuman strength of the attackers (like Hanuman) and the total helplessness of the guards. It serves to incite the King's sense of justice regarding the mistreatment of his loyal servants.
