त्वया प्रनष्टे तिलके तं किल स्मर्तुमर्हसि ।
एष निर्यातितः श्रीमान् मया ते वारिसम्भवः ।

tvayā pranaṣṭe tilake taṃ kila smartumarhasi |
eṣa niryātitaḥ śrīmān mayā te vārisambhavaḥ ॥5-65-23॥
Translation
"You ought to remember that incident when the tilaka was erased by you. This glorious jewel, born of the water, has now been sent back to you by me."

"जब मेरे माथे का तिलक मिट गया था, तब (आपने जो किया) उसे आपको स्मरण करना चाहिए। यह जल से उत्पन्न (मोतियों वाला) श्रीमान (चूड़ामणि) मैंने आपको लौटा दिया है।"
English Commentary
Sita sends the jewel back, an act heavy with symbolism. The Cūḍāmaṇi (crest jewel) is a symbol of her status and marriage. By stating eṣa niryātitaḥ (this is returned/sent back), she is entrusting her most precious possession to Hanuman to give to Rama. It signifies that she has detached herself from all ornamentation in her grief, and perhaps feels that she can no longer protect it in her precarious state. Describing it as vārisambhavaḥ (born of water/pearls) emphasizes its purity and value. She urges Rama to remember the intimacy associated with it, using the memory as a catalyst for his action.

सीता जी कहती हैं कि यह चूड़ामणि अब वापस राम के पास जा रहा है ('निर्यातितः' - लौटाया गया)। 'वारिसम्भवः' (जल से उत्पन्न) का अर्थ है कि इसमें मोती जड़े हैं (मोती समुद्र से मिलते हैं)। सीता जी का इसे लौटाना एक बहुत बड़ा संकेत है। स्त्रियाँ अपना सुहाग का चिन्ह तभी उतारती हैं जब स्थिति अत्यंत विकट हो। इसे भेजकर वे कह रही हैं कि "मैं शरीर से नहीं आ सकती, पर मेरी आत्मा और यह निशानी आपके पास आ रही है।" यह एक प्रकार का आत्म-समर्पण भी है और अंतिम गुहार भी। 'स्मर्तुमर्हसि' (आपको याद करना चाहिए) अधिकार और प्रेम दोनों का मिश्रण है।
