चिरं जीवति वैदेही यदि मासं धरिष्यति ।
क्षणं सौम्य न जीवेयं विना तामसितेक्षणाम् ।
।
॥५-६६-१०॥
ciraṃ jīvati vaidehī yadi māsaṃ dhariṣyati |
kṣaṇaṃ saumya na jīveyaṃ vinā tāmasitekṣaṇām ॥5-66-10॥
Translation
If Vaidehi can sustain her life for a month, she lives for a long time indeed. O gentle one, I cannot survive even for a moment without that dark-eyed lady.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि वैदेही एक मास तक प्राण धारण कर लेंगी, तो (समझो) वे बहुत काल तक जी लीं। हे सौम्य! मैं तो उस काली आँखों वाली (सीता) के बिना एक क्षण भी जीवित नहीं रह सकता।
English Commentary
Rama compares his capacity for endurance with Sita’s. Referring to her deadline of one month, he remarks that for her to survive that long is akin to living for an eternity (ciraṃ jīvati), implying her immense strength. In contrast, he confesses his own fragility: he feels he cannot survive even a kṣaṇa (moment) without her. The epithet asitekṣaṇām (black-eyed) evokes her beauty, making the separation harder. This verse highlights Rama's desperate impatience; the timeline of "one month" feels impossibly long to a heart that is breaking now.

यहाँ राम सीता की सहनशक्ति को अपनी सहनशक्ति से अधिक मानते हैं। सीता ने कहा था कि वे एक मास जीवित रहेंगी। राम कहते हैं कि मेरे लिए तो वह एक मास 'चिरकाल' (युगों) के समान है। 'क्षणं न जीवेयं'—राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि उनका धैर्य अब समाप्त हो चुका है। वे सीता को 'असितेक्षणाम्' (काली पुतलियों वाली/सुन्दर नेत्रों वाली) कहकर याद करते हैं। यह श्लोक राम के प्रेम की तीव्रता और उनकी मानसिक स्थिति की नाजुकता को दर्शाता है। वे मान रहे हैं कि सीता का तप उनसे श्रेष्ठ है जो वे इतना कष्ट सहकर भी प्राण बचाए हुए हैं।
