तं तु दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं राघवः शोककर्शितः ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् ।
।

taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā maṇiśreṣṭhaṃ rāghavaḥ śokakarśitaḥ |
netrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāṃ sugrīvamidamabravīt ॥5-66-2॥
Translation
Gazing at that excellent jewel, Raghava, emaciated by grief, spoke these words to Sugriva with eyes full of tears.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस श्रेष्ठ मणि को देखकर, शोक से दुर्बल हुए राघव (राम) ने आंसुओं से भरी हुई आँखों से सुग्रीव से यह कहा।
English Commentary
The physical toll of separation is highlighted here with the adjective śokakarśitaḥ (emaciated/withered by grief). Rama is not just sad; he is physically wasting away. He addresses Sugriva, acknowledging the Vanara King's role in retrieving this token. Speaking through tear-filled eyes (aśrupūrṇābhyām) signifies vulnerability. In the presence of his ally, the warrior facade drops, revealing the heartbroken husband. The jewel acts as a trigger, pulling memories to the surface and intensifying the reality of the separation. It sets the stage for Rama to share the history of the jewel, making Sugriva privy to his personal past.

यहाँ राम की शारीरिक स्थिति का वर्णन है—'शोककर्शितः' (शोक के कारण कमजोर/दुर्बल)। सीता के वियोग ने उन्हें शरीर से भी तोड़ दिया है। वे सुग्रीव को संबोधित करते हैं, क्योंकि सुग्रीव ही इस समय उनके सखा और सहायक हैं। राजा होने के नाते राम को सदैव धैर्यवान रहना होता है, किन्तु यहाँ मित्र के सामने उनका दुःख छलक पड़ा है। 'नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां' (आंसुओं से भरी दोनों आँखों से) - यह दर्शाता है कि उनकी दृष्टि धुंधली हो रही है, फिर भी वे उस मणि को निहार रहे हैं। यह मणि अतीत के सुखद क्षणों और वर्तमान की पीड़ा के बीच एक सेतु बन गया है।
