Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मणिरत्नमिदं दत्तं वैदेह्याः श्वशुरेण मे ।
वधूकाले यथा बद्धमधिकं मूर्ध्नि शोभते ।
।
॥५-६६-४॥
maṇiratnamidaṃ dattaṃ vaidehyāḥ śvaśureṇa me |
vadhūkāle yathā baddhamadhikaṃ mūrdhni śobhate ॥5-66-4॥
Translation
This gem was given to Vaidehi by my father (her father-in-law). When fastened during the wedding time, it shone exceedingly beautiful on her head.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह श्रेष्ठ मणि वैदेही (सीता) को मेरे ससुर (जनक) द्वारा नहीं, बल्कि मेरे (राम के) 'ससुर' (यहाँ आशय पिता दशरथ से है, जो सीता के ससुर हैं) द्वारा दी गई थी। विवाह के समय जब इसे बांधा गया था, तब यह उनके मस्तक पर अत्यंत शोभा दे रहा था।
English Commentary
Rama provides the provenance of the jewel, linking it to the most significant moments of his life. It was a gift from his father, King Dasharatha (Vaidehyāḥ śvaśureṇa - by Vaidehi's father-in-law), during their wedding (vadhūkāle). This adds layers of emotional weight: it represents the father he lost and the wife who is currently lost. The memory of how it looked on her head evokes the image of Sita as a radiant bride, untouched by sorrow. The contrast between that joyous beginning and the current tragic separation makes the sight of the jewel agonizingly poignant.

राम अब इस मणि का इतिहास बताते हैं। यह मणि राजा दशरथ द्वारा सीता को 'मुंह दिखाई' या विवाह के समय आशीर्वाद के रूप में दी गई थी। 'वधूकाले' (विवाह के समय) का स्मरण करके राम उस सुखद अतीत में चले जाते हैं जब सब कुछ मंगलमय था। यह मणि केवल एक आभूषण नहीं, बल्कि पिता दशरथ के आशीर्वाद का प्रतीक है। राम को यह देखकर पिता की भी याद आती है और उस समय की भी जब सीता नववधू के रूप में उनके जीवन में आई थीं। वर्तमान का दुःख और अतीत का सुख मिलकर उनकी पीड़ा को और बढ़ा देते हैं।
