मोघमस्त्रं न शक्यं तु कर्तुमित्येव राघव ।
भवांस्तस्याक्षि काकस्य हिनस्ति स्म स दक्षिणम् ।

Moghamastraṃ na śakyaṃ tu kartumityeva Rāghava । Bhavāṃstasyākṣi kākasya hinasti sma sa dakṣiṇam । । 5.67.17 । । ॥5-67-17॥
Translation
"O Raghava! Seeing that it is not possible to render the Brahmastra ineffective (void), you destroyed the right eye of that crow."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राघव! 'ब्रह्मास्त्र को व्यर्थ करना संभव नहीं है', ऐसा समझकर आपने उस कौए की दाहिनी आँख नष्ट कर दी।"
English Commentary
Rama honors the cosmic laws of the weapon while granting mercy. The Brahmastra cannot be Mogham (useless/void); once invoked, it must strike. To satisfy the weapon's requirement without killing Jayanta, Rama directed it to destroy only his Dakshinam akshi (right eye). This act balances justice and mercy perfectly—the sinner is punished and scarred as a reminder, yet his life is spared. It illustrates Rama's adherence to the truth of his word and the laws of weaponry.
हिंदी टीका
राम की दया न्याय के विरुद्ध नहीं थी। ब्रह्मास्त्र अचूक है, उसे 'मोघ' (निष्फल) नहीं किया जा सकता; उसे किसी न किसी लक्ष्य को भेदना ही होता है। इसलिए, जीवनदान देने के बावजूद, राम ने दंड स्वरूप उसकी एक आँख ले ली। यह एक समझौता था—प्राणों के बदले आँख। इससे अस्त्र की मर्यादा भी रह गई और शरण आए हुए जीव की रक्षा भी हो गई। लोक मान्यता है कि तब से कौए एक ही आँख से देखते हैं (काणी आँख)।
