Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स गन्धः तम् महा सत्त्वम् बन्धुर् बन्धुम् इव उत्तमम् ।
इत एहि इति उवाच इव तत्र यत्र स रावणः ॥ ॥५-९-२१॥
Sa gandhaḥ tam mahā sattvam bandhur bandhum iva uttamam । Ita ehi iti uvāca iva tatra yatra sa rāvaṇaḥ ॥ ॥5-9-21॥
Translation
That fragrance seemed to say to that mighty one (Hanuman), 'Come here,' leading him to where Ravana was, just as a relative calls a close relative.

वह (भोजन की) सुगंध उस महाबलशाली (हनुमान) को, जहाँ रावण था, वहाँ "इधर आओ" – ऐसा कहती हुई सी प्रतीत हुई, जैसे एक भाई (बंधु) अपने उत्तम भाई को बुला रहा हो।
English Commentary
This verse employs a striking personification. The scent acts as a guide. It is described as calling out ita ehi ("Come hither") to Hanuman, leading him directly to Ravana's location. The simile used is bandhur bandhum iva (like a relative calling a relative), suggesting a welcoming, almost destined pull. The fragrance acts as a traitor to Ravana, inviting his destroyer directly to him. It emphasizes that in the midst of confusion, the very signs of Ravana's indulgence (the smell of his feast) betrayed his location to the Mahā sattvam (great being, Hanuman).

यहाँ वाल्मीकि ने गंध का मानवीकरण (Personification) किया है। भोजन की वह तीव्र सुगंध हनुमान जी के लिए मार्गदर्शक बन गई। 'इत एहि' (इधर आओ) - सुगंध मानो उन्हें आमंत्रित कर रही थी। उपमा बहुत रोचक है: 'बन्धुर् बन्धुम् इव' (जैसे एक भाई दूसरे भाई को बुलाता है)। यह एक विडंबना भी है—राक्षसों के भोग की गंध एक भक्त (हनुमान) को उसके लक्ष्य (रावण) तक ले जा रही है। गंध ने अनजाने में शत्रु का काम आसान कर दिया। 'महा सत्त्वम्' विशेषण हनुमान के धैर्य और संयम को दर्शाता है कि वे इस प्रलोभन में फँसे नहीं, बल्कि इसका उपयोग लक्ष्य तक पहुँचने में किया।
