Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्वर्गो अयम् देव लोको अयम् इन्द्रस्य इयम् पुरी भवेत् ।
सिद्धिर् वा इयम् परा हि स्याद् इति अमन्यत मारुतिः ॥ ॥५-९-३१॥
Svargo ayam deva loko ayam indrasya iyam purī bhavet । Siddhir vā iyam parā hi syād iti amanyata mārutiḥ ॥ ॥5-9-31॥
Translation
Hanuman thought to himself, "Is this Heaven? Is this the world of the Gods? Could this be Indra's city? Or is this the ultimate Siddhi (spiritual power/success) manifest?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
मारुति (हनुमान) ने (विस्मित होकर) ऐसा माना—"क्या यह स्वर्ग है? क्या यह देवलोक है? क्या यह इंद्र की अमरावती पुरी है? अथवा क्या यह कोई परम सिद्धि ही (साक्षात रूप में) है?"
English Commentary
This verse captures the magnitude of Hanuman's astonishment. Known for his wisdom and composure, even Hanuman is momentarily bewildered by the splendor before him. He cycles through hypotheses: Is it Svarga (Heaven)? The world of Devas? Or Indra’s capital, Amaravati? Finding these comparisons insufficient, he wonders if it is Parā Siddhi—the ultimate success or supernatural power manifest in physical form. This internal monologue highlights that Ravana’s wealth was not merely material but a result of his intense penance (Tapas). It takes a magnificence transcending earthly limits to make a celestial being like Hanuman question the reality of what he is seeing.

यह 'संदेह अलंकार' का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है और सुंदरकाण्ड के सबसे प्रसिद्ध श्लोकों में से एक है। हनुमान जी, जो ज्ञानी और संयमी हैं, रावण के वैभव को देखकर इतने चकित हो गए कि उन्हें अपनी आँखों पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ। 'स्वर्ग', 'देवलोक' और 'इन्द्रपुरी'—ये उपमान बताते हैं कि लंका का वैभव पृथ्वी के किसी भी मानदंड से परे था। अंत में हनुमान जी सोचते हैं कि क्या यह 'परा सिद्धि' है—यानी क्या यह तपस्या या योग से प्राप्त सर्वोच्च सफलता का मूर्त रूप है? यह श्लोक रावण के तप के प्रभाव को स्वीकार करता है। शत्रु के घर में ऐसी प्रशंसा करना हनुमान जी की निष्पक्ष दृष्टि और वाल्मीकि जी की तटस्थ वर्णन शैली को दर्शाता है।
