Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तासाम् सम्वृत दन्तानि मीलित अक्षाणि मारुतिः ।
अपश्यत् पद्म गन्धीनि वदनानि सुयोषिताम् ॥ ॥५-९-३७॥
Tāsām samvṛta dantāni mīlita akṣāṇi mārutiḥ । Apaśyat padma gandhīni vadanāni suyoṣitām ॥ ॥5-9-37॥
Translation
Maruti (Hanuman) observed the faces of those beautiful women, with their teeth covered (by lips), eyes closed, and exuding the fragrance of lotuses.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मारुति (हनुमान) ने उन सुंदर स्त्रियों के मुख देखे, जिनके दाँत (होठों से) ढके हुए थे, आँखें बंद थीं और जिनसे कमल के समान सुगंध आ रही थी।
English Commentary
Hanuman observes the sleeping women with the detachment of a spy yet the appreciation of a poet. The description focuses on the serenity of their features—closed eyes and concealed teeth signify deep, undisturbed sleep. The mention of 'lotus fragrance' (Padma gandhini) emanating from their mouths suggests a supernatural purity and beauty, transcending their association with the Rakshasa race. This olfactory detail adds a layer of realism to the sensory experience of the verse. It underscores that physical beauty and grace can exist independently of moral alignment, a nuance often explored in the Ramayana regarding Ravana's court.

यहाँ हनुमान जी की सूक्ष्म दृष्टि और उनकी इन्द्रियों की सजगता का वर्णन है। यद्यपि वे राक्षस कुल की स्त्रियाँ हैं, किन्तु वाल्मीकि जी उनके शारीरिक सौंदर्य और पवित्रता का वर्णन करने से नहीं चूकते। उनके मुखों से 'पद्म गन्धी' (कमल की सुगंध) का आना उनके उच्च वर्ग और दैवीय सौंदर्य का प्रतीक है। 'सम्वृत दन्तानि' (ढके हुए दाँत) और 'मीलित अक्षाणि' (बंद आँखें) उनकी गहन और निश्चिंत निद्रा को दर्शाते हैं। एक ब्रह्मचारी वानर के रूप में हनुमान जी का शत्रु की स्त्रियों को इतने निकट से देखना एक कठिन परीक्षा थी, परन्तु वे यहाँ केवल एक दृष्टा (observer) के रूप में सौंदर्य का अवलोकन कर रहे हैं, बिना किसी विकार के।
