Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रबुद्धानि इव पद्मानि तासाम् भूत्वा क्षपा क्षये ।
पुनः सम्वृत पत्राणि रात्राव् इव बभुः तदा ॥ ॥५-९-३८॥
Prabuddhāni iva padmāni tāsām bhūtvā kṣapā kṣaye । Punaḥ samvṛta patrāṇi rātrāv iva babhuḥ tadā ॥ ॥5-9-38॥
Translation
Their faces appeared like lotuses that, having bloomed at the end of the night (at dawn), had now closed their petals again as if it were night.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनके मुख उन कमलों के समान सुशोभित हो रहे थे जो रात्रि के अंत में (प्रातःकाल) खिल जाते हैं, किन्तु अब रात्रि के समय पुनः अपनी पंखुड़ियाँ बंद कर ली हों।
English Commentary
This verse plays with the imagery of the diurnal cycle of lotuses to describe the sleeping women. Their faces retain the freshness of flowers that have bloomed at dawn, yet they are currently 'closed' due to sleep, just as lotuses fold their petals at night. The metaphor suggests a latent vibrancy; even in their repose, the potential for brilliance remains, much like a closed bud waiting for the sun. It emphasizes the natural rhythm of their beauty, governed by sleep just as flowers are governed by the sun and moon. The comparison reinforces the floral theme prevalent in this section.

कवि यहाँ रानियों के मुख-मंडल की तुलना पुनः कमलों से करते हैं, परन्तु इसमें एक काल-चक्र का संकेत है। 'क्षपा क्षये' का अर्थ है रात्रि का क्षय होने पर (सुबह)। उनके चेहरे ऐसे लगते हैं जैसे दिन में खिले हुए कमल हों जो अब रात्रि के प्रभाव से पुनः संकुचित (बंद) हो गए हैं। यह उपमा निद्रावस्था की निष्क्रियता और सुंदरता दोनों को एक साथ दर्शाती है। बंद पंखुड़ियाँ सुरक्षा और विश्राम का प्रतीक हैं। यह श्लोक यह भी ध्वनित करता है कि जैसे कमल सूर्योदय पर फिर खिलेंगे, वैसे ही ये स्त्रियाँ जागने पर पुनः अपनी कांति बिखेरेंगी।
