सुकुण्डल धराः च अन्या विच्चिन्न म्Rदित स्रजः ।
गज इन्द्र म्Rदिताः फुल्ला लता इव महा वने ॥ ॥५-९-४८॥
sukūṇḍala dharāḥ ca anyā viccinna mṛdita srajaḥ |
gaja indra mṛditāḥ phullā latā iva mahā vane ॥5-9-48॥
Translation
Other women wore beautiful earrings, yet their garlands were torn and crushed. They appeared like flowering creepers in a great forest that had been trampled by the king of elephants.

अन्य कई स्त्रियाँ सुंदर कुंडल धारण किए हुए थीं, किन्तु उनकी मालाएँ टूटकर मसली गई थीं। वे स्त्रियाँ महावन में गजेन्द्र (विशाल हाथी) द्वारा रौंदी गई फूली हुई लताओं के समान प्रतीत हो रही थीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a classic Upama (simile) here to describe the state of the sleeping women in Ravana's harem. While they still adorn beautiful earrings (sukuṇḍala), their flower garlands are broken and crushed (mṛdita srajaḥ), indicating the aftermath of revelry or intimacy. Comparing them to flowering creepers trampled by a "king of elephants" (gajendra) in a great forest serves a dual purpose: it emphasizes the delicate beauty of the women (creepers) and the overpowering virility and dominance of Ravana (the elephant). The imagery suggests a scene of beautiful disarray, where the exhaustion of the women is portrayed not as a lack of beauty, but as a testament to the intensity of their interaction with their lord, capturing a mood of languid eroticism (Shringara Rasa).

यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी ने एक अत्यंत सशक्त 'उपमा अलंकार' का प्रयोग किया है। शयन कक्ष में निद्रामग्न रावण की पत्नियों की स्थिति का चित्रण करते हुए कवि कहते हैं कि यद्यपि उन्होंने सुंदर आभूषण (कुंडल) पहन रखे हैं, तथापि उनकी मालाएँ विदीर्ण हैं। यहाँ 'गजेन्द्र मृदिताः' (हाथी द्वारा रौंदी गई) उपमा का ध्वन्यार्थ गहरा है। जिस प्रकार एक मतवाला हाथी वन में सुंदर लताओं का उपभोग कर उन्हें अस्त-व्यस्त कर देता है, उसी प्रकार रावण (गजेन्द्र) के संसर्ग के पश्चात ये सुंदर स्त्रियाँ (लताएं) निढाल होकर सो रही हैं। यह उपमा न केवल दृश्य को स्पष्ट करती है, बल्कि रावण के पौरुष और उन स्त्रियों की कोमल, थकी हुई अवस्था के बीच के विरोधाभास को भी सुंदरता से उभारती है।
