Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
चन्द्र अम्शु किरण आभाः च हाराः कासाम्चिद् उत्कटाः ।
हम्सा इव बभुः सुप्ताः स्तन मध्येषु योषिताम् ॥ ॥५-९-४९॥
candra amśu kiraṇa ābhāḥ ca hārāḥ kāsāmcid utkaṭāḥ |
hamsā iva babhuḥ suptāḥ stana madhyeṣu yoṣitām ॥5-9-49॥
Translation
The magnificent necklaces of some women, shining with the luster of moonbeams, appeared like swans sleeping between their breasts.

किन्हीं स्त्रियों के स्तनों के मध्य भाग में चन्द्रमा की किरणों की आभा के समान चमकने वाले उत्कृष्ट हार ऐसे शोभा पा रहे थे, मानो हंस सो रहे हों।
English Commentary
This verse showcases Valmiki's mastery over poetic imagery. He compares the pearl necklaces resting on the women's chests to moonbeams (candra amśu) due to their pure white radiance. Taking the imagery further, he suggests that these necklaces look like swans (hamsa) sleeping between the breasts of the women. In Sanskrit poetics, the breast region is often metaphorically linked to river banks or lotus buds; here, placing the "swan" (necklace) in that valley creates a serene, picturesque visual. The use of the word suptāḥ (sleeping) for the necklaces attributes a quality of animate stillness to inanimate objects, mirroring the deep slumber of the women themselves. It is a tranquil image that enhances the beauty of the sleeping harem without being overtly carnal.

इस श्लोक में 'उत्प्रेक्षा' और 'उपमा' का सुंदर संगम है। कवि स्त्रियों के वक्षस्थल पर पड़े मोतियों के हारों का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। हारों की श्वेत धवल कांति की तुलना 'चन्द्र किरण' से की गई है। इसके पश्चात, कवि एक अद्भुत कल्पना करते हैं कि वे हार स्त्रियों के स्तनों के बीच ऐसे लग रहे हैं जैसे दो पर्वत शिखरों या नदी के तटों के बीच हंस सो रहे हों। प्राचीन साहित्य में स्तनों की तुलना अक्सर चक्रवाक पक्षियों या पर्वत शिखरों से की जाती है, और यहाँ मोतियों के हार को हंस बताकर कवि ने शांति और सुंदरता का एक चित्र खींचा है। 'सुप्ताः' (सोये हुए) शब्द का प्रयोग हारों की निश्चलता को दर्शाता है, जो स्त्रियों की गहरी नींद के कारण हिल-डुल नहीं रहे हैं।
