Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किन्किणी जाल सम्काशः ता हेम विपुल अम्बुजाः ।
भाव ग्राहा यशः तीराः सुप्ता नद्य इव आबभुः ॥ ॥५-९-५२॥
kinkiṇī jāla samkāśāḥ tā hema vipula ambujāḥ |
bhāva grāhā yaśaḥ tīrāḥ suptā nadya iva ābabhuḥ ॥5-9-52॥
Translation
Resplendent with clusters of tiny bells, bearing large golden lotuses, containing crocodiles in the form of their amorous gestures, and having banks in the form of their fame, they appeared like sleeping rivers.

वे स्त्रियाँ, जो करधनी की घुँघरुओं के समूह (किंकिणी जाल) से सुशोभित थीं, ऐसी लग रही थीं मानो सोने के बड़े-बड़े कमलों वाली, शृंगार आदि भावों रूपी ग्राह (मगरमच्छ) से युक्त और यश रूपी तटों वाली सोई हुई नदियाँ हों।
English Commentary
Valmiki completes the river metaphor here with intricate symbolism. The clusters of waist-bells (kinkiṇī jāla) correspond to large golden lotuses floating on the water. The psychological and abstract attributes of the women are given physical form in the river: their bhāva (amorous sentiments or gestures) are the grāha (crocodiles or aquatic predators) because they seize the hearts of men just as crocodiles seize prey. Their yashas (fame or reputation) forms the tīra (banks), suggesting that their renown bounds and defines them just as banks define a river. The phrase suptā nadya (sleeping rivers) is a paradoxical and beautiful image, suggesting potential energy and flow that is currently stilled, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of the sleeping harem.

नदी के रूपक को पूर्णता प्रदान करते हुए यह श्लोक अत्यंत गूढ़ है। स्त्रियों की करधनियों (किंकिणी) को नदी में खिलने वाले स्वर्ण कमलों के समान बताया गया है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपमा 'भाव' और 'यश' की है। स्त्रियों के जो हाव-भाव और प्रेम चेष्टाएँ (भाव) हैं, उन्हें नदी के 'ग्राह' (मगरमच्छ या जलीय जंतु) कहा गया है, क्योंकि वे दर्शकों के मन को पकड़ लेते हैं। उनके 'यश' (कीर्ति/सौंदर्य की प्रसिद्धि) को नदी का 'तट' (तीर) कहा गया है जो प्रवाह को मर्यादित करता है। 'सुप्ता नद्य' (सोई हुई नदियाँ) का प्रयोग अत्यंत काव्यात्मक है; नदियाँ जागी हुई (बहती) होती हैं, किन्तु यहाँ शांत जल वाली नदियों की कल्पना है, जो इन सुन्दरी स्त्रियों की निश्चल निद्रा को प्रतिबिंबित करती है।
