Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावण आनन शन्काः च काश्चिद् रावण योषितः ।
मुखानि स्म सपत्नीनाम् उपाजिघ्रन् पुनः पुनः ॥ ॥५-९-५८॥
rāvaṇa ānana śankāḥ ca kāścid rāvaṇa yoṣitaḥ |
mukhāni sma sapatnīnām upājighran punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-9-58॥
Translation
Some of Ravana's wives, suspecting the faces of their co-wives to be the face of Ravana, smelled (kissed) them again and again.

रावण की कुछ पत्नियाँ (मदहोशी और नींद में) अपनी सौतों (सपत्नियों) के मुख को रावण का मुख समझकर बार-बार सूंघ (चूम) रही थीं।
English Commentary
This verse presents a vivid instance of Bhrantiman Alankara (metaphor of error/illusion). In their intoxicated and drowsy state, the women have lost their spatial awareness. Driven by their deep affection for Ravana, some wives mistake the faces of their co-wives (sapatnīnām) lying nearby for the face of Ravana himself. The verb upājighran (smelled/sniffed) refers to the ancient Indian mode of kissing or affectionate smelling. This action of repeatedly kissing their rivals thinking they are their husband highlights two things: the overpowering influence of alcohol and sleep, and their subconscious fixation on Ravana. It adds a touch of irony and human vulnerability to the otherwise majestic description of the harem.

यह श्लोक 'भ्रांतिमान अलंकार' का उदाहरण है और अंतःपुर की स्थिति का एक यथार्थवादी और कुछ हद तक हास्य-मिश्रित चित्रण है। मदिरा के प्रभाव और गहरी नींद के कारण, स्त्रियाँ अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठी हैं। वे रावण के प्रति इतनी आसक्त हैं कि स्वप्न या अर्ध-निद्रा में पास लेटी हुई अपनी सौत (sapatnī) के मुख को ही अपने प्रियतम रावण का मुख समझ बैठती हैं। 'उपाजिघ्रन्' (सूंघना/प्राचीन काल में स्नेह प्रदर्शन का एक रूप, जिसे चुम्बन के समान माना जाता है) क्रिया उनके प्रेम की तीव्रता को दर्शाती है। यह दृश्य रावण के प्रति उनके गहरे प्रेम और मदिरा के प्रभाव से उत्पन्न विभ्रम (confusion) को सुंदरता से व्यक्त करता है।
