युद्धकामेन ताः सर्वा रावणेन हृताः स्त्रियः ।
समदा मदनेनैव मोहिताः काश्चिदागताः ॥५-९-६९॥
Yuddhakāmena tāḥ sarvā rāvaṇena hṛtāḥ striyaḥ । Samadā madanenaiva mohitāḥ kāścidāgatāḥ ॥ ॥5-9-69॥
Translation
All those women had been abducted by Ravana, who was eager for war. However, they were now full of passion. Some, indeed, had come on their own, deluded/enchanted by the god of love.

युद्ध की इच्छा रखने वाले रावण ने उन सभी स्त्रियों का अपहरण किया था, किन्तु (अब) वे सब 'समदा' (काम और उत्साह से युक्त) थीं। उनमें से कुछ तो कामदेव (मदन) से मोहित होकर स्वयं ही आई थीं।
English Commentary
This clarifies the provenance of the women. Most were "taken" (hṛtāḥ) by Ravana during his military campaigns (yuddhakāmena). However, the verse adds a crucial qualifier: despite being abducted originally, they are now samadā (impassioned/happy) and mohitāḥ (infatuated). They have accepted their fate and grown to love their captor. Some even came voluntarily. This distinction is vital for the narrative: it establishes that Ravana is accustomed to women eventually yielding to him, which explains his frustration and confusion regarding Sita's steadfast refusal.

यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि रावण ने इन स्त्रियों को कैसे प्राप्त किया। 'हृताः' का अर्थ है बलपूर्वक हरण करना। रावण ने युद्धों में विजय प्राप्त कर इनका हरण किया था। परन्तु, स्थिति अब बदल चुकी है। यद्यपि वे हरण करके लाई गई थीं, अब वे 'समदा' (प्रसन्न और कामयुक्त) हैं और रावण से प्रेम करती हैं। कुछ तो रावण के रूप पर मुग्ध होकर स्वयं आई थीं। यह रावण के चरित्र की जटिलता है—वह विजेता भी है और प्रेमी भी। यह श्लोक सीता जी की स्थिति से अंतर स्पष्ट करने की भूमिका तैयार कर रहा है।
