Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न तत्र काचित् प्रमदा प्रसह्य ।
वीर्य उपपन्नेन गुणेन लब्धा ।
न च अन्य कामा अपि न च अन्य पूर्वा ।
विना वर अर्हाम् जनक आत्मजाम् तु ॥५-९-७०॥
Na tatra kācit pramadā prasahya । Vīrya upapannena guṇena labdhā । Na ca anya kāmā api na ca anya pūrvā । Vinā vara arhām janaka ātmajām tu ॥ ॥5-9-70॥
Translation
Among them, there was no woman who had been taken by force by the powerful Ravana (and kept against her will), nor any who desired another man, nor any who belonged to another before (and remained loyal to him)—except for the worthy daughter of Janaka (Sita).
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहां (उस अन्तःपुर में) कोई भी ऐसी स्त्री नहीं थी जिसे वीर्यवान रावण ने बलपूर्वक (उसकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध) रखकर भोगा हो, या जो किसी अन्य पुरुष की कामना करती हो, या जो पहले किसी और की रही हो (और अभी भी उसी का स्मरण करती हो)—सिवाय उस श्रेष्ठ वराहा जनकपुत्री (सीता) के।
English Commentary
This is a critical exclusionary verse. It asserts that every woman in that opulent harem was there, by that point, willingly. None were pining for another man (anya kāmā) or holding onto a past husband (anya pūrvā). They had all succumbed to Ravana's guna (qualities) or power. The massive exception is explicitly stated: Janaka ātmajām (the daughter of Janaka, Sita). This stark contrast elevates Sita's character. While thousands of celestial and royal women yielded to Ravana, Sita alone stands as the solitary figure of resistance and unshakeable loyalty to Rama, defining the central conflict of the Ramayana.

यह श्लोक पूरे सर्ग का 'सार' और 'नैतिक धुरी' है। कवि स्पष्ट करते हैं कि रावण के पास जितनी भी स्त्रियाँ थीं, वे सब अंततः रावण को चाहने लगी थीं। वहां कोई भी ऐसी नहीं थी जो रो रही हो या किसी और पुरुष को याद कर रही हो। 'विना... जनक आत्मजाम् तु' (सिवाय जनकनंदिनी के)—यह वाक्यांश सीता जी की महानता को सर्वोच्च शिखर पर स्थापित करता है। सीता ही एकमात्र अपवाद हैं जो रावण के वैभव, शक्ति और प्रलोभन के आगे नहीं झुकीं। यह श्लोक सीता के 'पातिव्रत्य' धर्म को रावण की सैकड़ों रानियों के 'काम' के विपरीत खड़ा करता है।
