सर्वथा सुकृतं तावत्सीतायाः परिमार्गणम् ।
सागरं तु समासाद्य भूयो नष्टं मनो मम ॥६-१-१७॥
sarvathā sukṛtaṃ tāvatsītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam । sāgaraṃ tu samāsādya bhūyo naṣṭaṃ mano mama ॥6-1-17॥
Translation
The search for Sita has indeed been well accomplished in every way; but having encountered the ocean (in thought), my mind is again lost in despondency.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता की खोज का कार्य तो सब प्रकार से भली-भांति संपन्न हो गया, किंतु समुद्र (की विशालता) को सामने पाकर मेरा मन पुनः नष्ट (निराश/व्याकुल) हो रहा है।
English Commentary
Shri Rama juxtaposes the success of the search against the barrier of the ocean. While he validates the mission's success ('sukṛtaṃ'), the reality of the geography crashes in. 'Naṣṭaṃ mano mama' (my mind is lost/ruined) expresses deep anxiety. This is part of the 'Nara-lila' (divine play as a human); Shri Rama enacts the despair of a general facing an impassable obstacle to evoke a solution from his allies. It sets the dramatic tension: the goal is visible (thanks to Hanuman), but the path is blocked by nature itself.

श्री राम यथार्थवादी हैं। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि खोज ('परिमार्गणम्') सफल रही, जो कि 'सुकृतं' (अच्छी तरह किया गया) है। परन्तु, समस्या का दूसरा चरण—समुद्र—अत्यंत विकराल है। 'नष्टं मनो मम' (मेरा मन नष्ट/व्याकुल हो रहा है) श्री राम की मानवीय लीला को दर्शाता है। वे एक साधारण मनुष्य की भांति चिंता प्रकट करते हैं ताकि वानर सेना और सुग्रीव समस्या की गंभीरता को समझें। 100 योजन का समुद्र पूरी सेना के लिए एक असंभव बाधा प्रतीत होता है।
