Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उभौ हि परमैष्वासावुभौ शस्त्रविशारदौ ।
उभावस्त्रविदां मुख्यावुभौ युद्धे विचेरतुः ॥६-१००-३२॥
ubhau hi paramaiṣvāsāvubhau śastraviśāradau |
ubhāvastravidāṃ mukhyāvubhau yuddhe viceratuḥ ॥6-100-32॥
Translation
Both were supreme archers, both expert in weapons, both chiefs among knowers of Astras (divine missiles), and both moved (skillfully) in the battle.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे दोनों ही श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर थे, दोनों ही शस्त्र-विद्या में निपुण थे, दोनों अस्त्र-वेत्ताओं में मुख्य थे और दोनों ही युद्ध में (समान रूप से) विचर रहे थे।
English Commentary
The repetition of 'ubhau' (both) emphasizes the parity between the combatants. In terms of skill ('śastraviśāradau') and knowledge of divine weapons ('astravidāṃ'), they are equals. This highlights that Ravana is a worthy opponent for Shri Rama, making Shri Rama's eventual victory a triumph of righteousness, not just superior firepower.

वाल्मीकि दोनों योद्धाओं की समानता ('उभौ') पर जोर दे रहे हैं। श्री राम और रावण कौशल में समान हैं। अंतर केवल धर्म और अधर्म का है। यह समानता युद्ध को और अधिक रोमांचक बनाती है क्योंकि परिणाम अनिश्चित लगता है।
