तामसं स महाघोरं चकारास्त्रं सुदारुणम् ।
निर्ददाह कपीन् सर्वांस्ते प्रपेतुः समन्ततः ॥६-१००-८॥
tāmasaṃ sa mahāghoraṃ cakārāstraṃ sudāruṇam |
nirdadāha kapīn sarvāṃste prapetuḥ samantataḥ ॥6-100-8॥
Translation
He unleashed the extremely terrible and cruel 'Tamasa' (darkness) weapon. It began to scorch all the monkeys, and they fell/fled in all directions.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उसने अत्यंत घोर और दारुण 'तामस' अस्त्र का प्रयोग किया। उसने (उस अस्त्र से) सब वानरों को भस्म करना शुरू कर दिया, जिससे वे चारों ओर गिरने (भागने) लगे।
English Commentary
Ravana opens his offensive with the 'Tamasa' Astra, a weapon of darkness and destruction. This weapon is 'sudāruṇam' (very cruel). It scorched the Vanara army, causing immediate chaos. The use of celestial weapons (Astras) signifies that this is no longer a conventional battle but a clash of divine and demonic powers.
हिंदी टीका
रावण ने युद्ध आरंभ करते ही 'तामस' अस्त्र का प्रयोग किया। यह अस्त्र अंधकार और भ्रम उत्पन्न करने वाला तथा संहारक है। 'निर्ददाह' (जलाने लगा) शब्द बताता है कि वानर सेना इस अस्त्र के ताप को सह नहीं पाई। यह रावण की मायावी युद्ध शैली का परिचय है।
