Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स शरैर्भिन्नसर्वाङ्गो गात्रप्रस्रुतशोणितः ।
राक्षसेन्द्रः समूहस्थः फुल्लाशोक इवाबभौ ॥६-१०४-३१॥
sa śarairbhinnasarvāṅgo gātraprasrutaśoṇitaḥ |
rākṣasendraḥ samūhasthaḥ phullāśoka ivābabhau ॥6-104-31॥
Translation
With all his limbs pierced by arrows and blood flowing from his body, the Lord of Rakshasas, standing in the midst of his host, looked like a flowering Ashoka tree.
हिंदी अनुवाद
बाणों से बिंधे हुए सब अंगों वाला और शरीर से बहते हुए रक्त वाला वह राक्षसराज, (अपनी) सेना के बीच फूले हुए अशोक वृक्ष की भांति सुशोभित हुआ।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a vivid simile ('Upama'). Ravana, dark in complexion, covered in flowing red blood ('śoṇitaḥ'), resembles an Ashoka tree in full bloom with red flowers. This imagery captures both the gore of the battle and the tragic grandeur of the fallen king.

यहाँ एक सुंदर किन्तु वीभत्स उपमा है। रावण का शरीर काला है और उस पर बहता लाल रक्त ऐसा लग रहा है जैसे काले अशोक वृक्ष पर लाल फूल ('फुल्लाशोक') खिले हों। यह रावण की घायल अवस्था का कलात्मक चित्रण है।
