मया तु हितकामेन यशश्च परिरक्षता ।
स्नेहप्रस्कन्नमनसा प्रियमित्यप्रियं कृतम् ॥६-१०६-१२॥
mayā tu hitakāmena yaśaśca parirakṣatā |
snehapraskannamanasā priyamityapriyaṃ kṛtam ॥6-106-12॥
Translation
"But I, wishing you well, protecting your fame, and with a mind filled with affection, did this unpleasant act thinking it to be beneficial."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"किन्तु आपका हित चाहने वाले, आपके यश की रक्षा करने वाले और स्नेह से भरे मन वाले मैंने, इसे प्रिय (हितकारी) समझकर यह अप्रिय कार्य किया।"
English Commentary
Bitter medicine is unpleasant to the patient but beneficial. The charioteer explains that withdrawing the chariot was to protect Ravana's fame, as regrouping to fight is better than dying in defeat or capture. This action was motivated by 'sneha' (affection), not rebellion.

कड़वी दवा रोगी को अप्रिय लगती है, पर वह हितकारी होती है। सारथी समझाता है कि रथ हटाना रावण के यश की रक्षा के लिए ही था, क्योंकि पराजित होकर मरने या पकड़े जाने से बेहतर है कि पुनः संगठित होकर लड़ा जाए। यह कार्य 'स्नेह' से प्रेरित था, विद्रोह से नहीं।
