महद् गृध्रकुलं चास्य भ्रममाणं नभस्स्थले ।
येन येन रथो याति तेन तेन प्रधावति ॥६-१०८-२२॥
mahad gṛdhrakulaṃ cāsya bhramamāṇaṃ nabhassthale |
yēna yēna rathō yāti tēna tēna pradhāvati ॥6-108-22॥
Translation
A vast flock of vultures began circling him in the sky. Wherever his chariot moved, they followed in that very direction.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आकाश में गीधों का एक विशाल झुण्ड उसके पीछे मंडराने लगा। रावण का रथ जिस-जिस दिशा में जाता था, गीध भी उसी ओर दौड़ने लगते थे।
English Commentary
Vultures are considered the literal messengers of death. Their circling above Ravana's chariot makes it clear that Time ('Kala') was now following him like a shadow. This sight was intended to shatter the morale of Lanka's forces. The phrase 'wherever the chariot went' indicates that death was stalking Ravana relentlessly, no matter his maneuvers.

गीध मृत्यु के साक्षात् दूत माने जाते हैं। उनका रावण के रथ के पीछे मंडराना यह स्पष्ट करता है कि काल अब रावण के साये के समान उसके साथ था। यह दृश्य लंका की सेना के मनोबल को जड़ से हिला देने वाला था। 'येन येन रथो याति' शब्द यह बताते हैं कि रावण जहाँ भी जा रहा था, मृत्यु उसका पीछा नहीं छोड़ रही थी।
