मातले पश्य संरब्धमापतन्तं रथं रिपोः ।
यथा ऽ ऽपसव्यं पतता वेगेन महता पुनः ॥६-१०८-९॥
mātale paśya saṃrabdhamāpatantaṃ rathaṃ ripoḥ |
yathā ' 'pasavyaṃ patatā vegena mahatā punaḥ ॥6-108-9॥
Translation
O Matali! Behold the enemy's chariot rushing toward us with great fury and speed. Maneuver in such a way that he is kept to our left (the inauspicious side for him).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मातलि! देखो, शत्रु का यह रथ अत्यंत क्रोध और वेग के साथ पुनः हमारी ओर बढ़ रहा है। तुम ऐसी चतुराई दिखाओ कि यह हमारे बाईं ओर (अपसव्य) ही रहे।
English Commentary
Shri Rama issues tactical instructions to Matali like a seasoned general. Maneuvering to keep the enemy to the 'left' ('Apasavyam') has dual significance: strategically, keeping the right side free is advantageous, and traditionally, having the opponent on the left is considered inauspicious for the opponent. Shri Rama wants Matali to ensure Ravana remains in a disadvantaged position.
हिंदी टीका
श्री राम यहाँ एक कुशल सेनापति की भाँति मातलि को सामरिक निर्देश दे रहे हैं। 'अपसव्यम्' (बाईं ओर रखना) का दो अर्थ है—युद्ध नीति में दाईं ओर का हिस्सा अधिक सुरक्षित होता है, और भारतीय परम्परा में शत्रु का बाईं ओर होना उसके लिए अशुभ माना जाता है। श्री राम चाहते हैं कि मातलि रथ को इस प्रकार चलाएँ कि रावण सदा एक प्रतिकूल स्थिति में बना रहे।
