वार्यमाणाः सुबहुशो वेष्टन्त्यः क्षितिपांसुषु ।
विमुक्तकेश्यो दुःखार्ता गावो वत्सहता इव ॥६-११३-२॥
vāryamāṇāḥ subahuśo veṣṭantyaḥ kṣitipāṃsuṣu |
vimuktakeśyo duḥkhārtā gāvo vatsahatā iva ॥6-113-2॥
Translation
Though restrained repeatedly, they rolled in the dust of the earth. With disheveled hair and tormented by sorrow, they appeared like cows whose calves have been killed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अनेक बार रोके जाने पर भी वे भूमि की धूल में लोटने लगीं। बिखरे हुए बालों वाली और दुःख से पीड़ित वे स्त्रियाँ वैसी ही लग रही थीं जैसे वे गायें जिनके बछड़े मार दिए गए हों।
English Commentary
The comparison of the women's distress to cows that have lost their calves is deeply moving. Just as a cow wails piteously without its calf, the women of Lanka felt orphaned without their protector. Rolling in the dust and having disheveled hair ('Vimuktakeshyah') mark the peak of their agony, where royal dignity no longer held any meaning.

यहाँ स्त्रियों की व्याकुलता की तुलना 'वत्सहता' गायों से की गई है, जो अत्यंत मर्मस्पर्शी है। जैसे बछड़े के बिना गाय करुण क्रन्दन करती है, वैसे ही लंका की स्त्रियां अपने रक्षक के बिना अनाथ महसूस कर रही थीं। धूल में लोटना और बालों का बिखरा होना (विमुक्तकेश्यः) उनके संताप की पराकाष्ठा है, जहाँ अब राजकीय वैभव का कोई मूल्य नहीं बचा था।
