तासां विलपमानानां तथा राक्षसयोषिताम् ।
ज्येष्ठा पत्नी प्रिया दीना भर्तारं समुदैक्षत ॥६-११४-१॥
tāsāṃ vilapamānānāṃ tathā rākṣasayoṣitām |
jyeṣṭhā patnī priyā dīnā bhartāraṃ samudaikṣata ॥6-114-1॥
Translation
Amidst those wailing demonesses, the eldest and beloved wife (Mandodari), having become wretched with grief, looked upon her husband.

उन विलाप करती हुई राक्षसियों के बीच में, (रावण की) ज्येष्ठ और प्रिय पत्नी, जो अत्यंत दीन (दुखी) हो गई थीं, ने अपने पति को देखा।
English Commentary
Mandodari holds the position of the 'Jyeshtha Patni' (Chief Queen), implying both authority and the depth of her bond with Ravana. As one of the 'Panchakanyas' (five virtuous maidens) in Hindu tradition, her gaze upon her fallen husband carries immense weight. She is not merely mourning a loss but witnessing the collapse of an era she helped build. Her wretched state ('dina') signifies the total transition from the pinnacle of royal glory to the depths of despair, setting the stage for one of the most insightful laments in the Ramayana.

मन्दोदरी केवल रावण की पत्नी ही नहीं, अपितु पटरानी थीं और 'पंचकन्याओं' में से एक मानी जाती हैं। उनका विलाप साधारण नहीं है; यह एक विदुषी और सती स्त्री का शोक है। यहाँ 'ज्येष्ठा' शब्द उनके अधिकार और उनके दुख की गंभीरता दोनों को रेखांकित करता है। जब परिवार का मुखिया गिरता है, तो सबसे बड़ा आघात उस व्यक्ति को लगता है जिसने उसके उत्थान और पतन के हर क्षण को सबसे निकट से देखा हो। मन्दोदरी की दीनता उस विशाल साम्राज्य के ढहने का प्रतीक है जिसकी वे स्वामिनी थीं।
