Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पतिव्रतायास्तपसा नूनं दग्धोऽसि मे प्रभो ।
तदैव यन्न दग्धस्त्वं धर्षयंस्तनुमध्यमाम् ॥६-११४-२४॥
pativratāyāstapasā nūnaṃ dagdho'si me prabho |
tadaiva yanna dagdhastvaṃ dharṣayaṃstanumadhyamām ॥6-114-24॥
Translation
O my Lord! Surely you have been burnt by the penance of that devoted wife. It is surprising you were not burnt at that very moment when you violated that slender-waisted one.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मेरे प्रभु! निश्चय ही आप उस पतिव्रता (सीता) के तप से जल गए हैं। (आश्चर्य है कि) उस कृशोदरी (सीता) का घर्षण (अपमान) करते समय आप उसी क्षण क्यों नहीं जल गए?
English Commentary
Mandodari attributes the true cause of death to Sita's tapas (spiritual heat of chastity). In her view, Shri Rama's arrows were just the physical agents; the metaphysical cause was the burning power of a virtuous woman. She marvels that Ravana wasn't incinerated instantly upon touching Sita, implying that the delayed reaction was due to the complex workings of Karma, but the result was inevitable.

मन्दोदरी मानती हैं कि श्री राम के बाण तो केवल निमित्त मात्र थे; वास्तव में रावण सीता के सतीत्व के तेज से जलकर भस्म हुआ है। भारतीय परंपरा में पतिव्रता का श्राप वज्र से भी कठोर माना जाता है। मन्दोदरी को आश्चर्य है कि सीता के स्पर्श मात्र से रावण तत्काल भस्म क्यों नहीं हो गया—यह केवल रावण के पूर्व पुण्य या सीता के धैर्य के कारण कुछ समय के लिए टल गया था।
