Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावणो नार्हते पूजां पूज्योऽपि गुरुगौरवात् ।
नृशंस इति मां कामं वक्ष्यन्ति मनुजा भुवि ॥६-११४-९६॥
rāvaṇo nārhate pūjāṃ pūjyo'pi gurugauravāt |
nṛśaṃsa iti māṃ kāmaṃ vakṣyanti manujā bhuvi ॥6-114-96॥
Translation
"Ravana does not deserve honor, even though he is worthy of respect due to being an elder. Let people on earth call me ruthless if they wish."
हिंदी अनुवाद
'यद्यपि बड़े भाई के नाते (गुरु गौरव से) वे पूजनीय हैं, तथापि रावण पूजा (संस्कार) के योग्य नहीं हैं। भले ही पृथ्वी पर लोग मुझे नृशंस (निर्दयी) कहेंगे (तो कहें)।'
English Commentary
Vibhishana acknowledges the social norm of respecting elders ('gurugauravāt') but argues that Ravana forfeited this right through his actions. He displays moral courage, willing to accept the stigma of being called 'ruthless' ('nṛśaṃsa') rather than honoring an adharmic person.

विभीषण जानते हैं कि समाज उन्हें 'नृशंस' कहेगा क्योंकि उन्होंने भाई का संस्कार नहीं किया, लेकिन वे इस अपयश को सहने को तैयार हैं। उनका मानना है कि अधर्म के प्रति कड़ा रुख अपनाना ही सच्चा धर्म है, चाहे वह सगा भाई ही क्यों न हो।
