Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रविश्य च महातेजा रावणस्य निवेशनम् ।
ददर्श मृजया हीनां सातङ्कामिव रोहिणीम् ॥६-११६-२॥
praviśya ca mahātejā rāvaṇasya niveśanam |
dadarśa mṛjayā hīnāṃ sātaṅkāmiva rohiṇīm ॥6-116-2॥
Translation
Entering Ravana's abode, the highly energetic one saw Sita, who was devoid of grooming (unwashed) and looked like Rohini under distress (eclipse).
हिंदी अनुवाद
महातेजस्वी (हनुमान) ने रावण के भवन में प्रवेश करके, स्नान-संस्कार से रहित (मलिन) और आतंकित रोहिणी के समान सीता को देखा।
English Commentary
Sita's condition is depicted using the metaphor of 'Rohini' (the Moon's favorite consort/star). Just as Rohini loses her luster during an eclipse, Sita, unaware of the news of victory, was still in a state of grief and unkemptness. Being 'mrijaya hinam' (devoid of grooming) signifies her devotion to her husband and the austerity of her separation.

सीता जी की अवस्था का चित्रण 'रोहिणी' (चंद्रमा की प्रिय पत्नी/नक्षत्र) के रूपक से किया गया है। जैसे ग्रहण के समय रोहिणी कांतिहीन हो जाती है, वैसे ही सीता जी विजय के समाचार से अनभिज्ञ होने के कारण अभी भी शोक और मलिनता में थीं। 'मृजया हीनां' (साज-सज्जा/स्नान रहित) होना उनके पतिव्रत और विरह की तपस्या का सूचक है।
