Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न परः पापमादत्ते परेषां पापकर्मणाम् ।
समयो रक्षितव्यस्तु सन्तश्चारित्रभूषणाः ॥६-११६-४३॥
na paraḥ pāpamādatte pareṣāṃ pāpakarmaṇām |
samayo rakṣitavyastu santaścāritrabhūṣaṇāḥ ॥6-116-43॥
Translation
"A superior person does not take on the sin of others who commit sinful deeds (i.e., does not retaliate with sin). The code of conduct must be preserved, for the virtuous are adorned by their character."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"श्रेष्ठ पुरुष पाप कर्म करने वाले दूसरों के पाप को ग्रहण नहीं करता (अर्थात बदला लेने के लिए स्वयं पापी नहीं बनता)। मर्यादा (शिष्टाचार) की रक्षा करनी चाहिए; क्योंकि संत (सज्जन) चरित्र रूपी आभूषण वाले होते हैं।"
English Commentary
This is a pivotal moral verse of the Ramayana. If we act wickedly towards the wicked, what remains the difference between us? Sita says that 'character' is the ornament of the virtuous, not revenge.

यह श्री रामायण का एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण नीति वाक्य है। यदि हम दुष्ट के साथ दुष्टता करेंगे, तो हममें और उसमें क्या अंतर रह जाएगा? सीता जी कहती हैं कि 'चरित्र' ही सज्जन का आभूषण है, प्रतिशोध नहीं।
