पश्यतस्तां तु रामस्य भूयः क्रोधो व्यवर्धत ।
प्रभृताज्यावसिक्तस्य पावकस्येव दीप्यतः ॥६-११८-११॥
paśyatastāṃ tu rāmasya bhūyaḥ krodho vyavardhata |
prabhṛtājyāvasiktasya pāvakasyeva dīpyataḥ ॥6-118-11॥
Translation
Seeing her (in that state), Shri Rama's anger increased further, just as a blazing fire flares up when doused with abundant ghee.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस (रोती हुई) सीता को देखकर श्री राम का क्रोध और अधिक बढ़ गया, जैसे बहुत सा घी डालने पर प्रज्वलित अग्नि की ज्वाला और भड़क उठती है।
English Commentary
A paradoxical reaction: Sita's tears fuel Shri Rama's anger instead of extinguishing it. The metaphor of fire fed by ghee (ajyavasiktasya) illustrates the intensity of his emotion. This anger is interpreted by commentators not as hatred for Sita, but as the manifestation of the intense internal conflict between his love and his duty to public opinion. Seeing her reminds him of the accusation against her character, which acts as fuel to the fire of his kingly dilemma.

यह स्थिति अत्यंत विरोधाभासी है। सामान्यतः प्रियतमा के आंसू प्रेमी का क्रोध शांत करते हैं, किन्तु यहाँ सीता को देखकर श्री राम का क्रोध 'घी पड़ी आग' की तरह भड़क उठा। विद्वानों का मत है कि यह क्रोध सीता पर नहीं, अपितु उस 'परिस्थिति' और 'लोक-मर्यादा' पर था जो उन्हें सीता को स्वीकार करने से रोक रही थी। श्री राम का हृदय भीतर से रो रहा था, किन्तु बाहर उन्हें वज्र से भी कठोर बनना पड़ा।
