सुग्रीवे वानरेन्द्रे वा राक्षसेन्द्रे विभीषणे ।
निवेशय मनः सीते यथा वा सुखमात्मनः ॥६-११८-२३॥
sugrīve vānarendre vā rākṣasendre vibhīṣaṇe |
niveśaya manaḥ sīte yathā vā sukhamātmanaḥ ॥6-118-23॥
Translation
Or, O Sita, set your mind on Sugriva, the Lord of Monkeys, or Vibhishana, the Lord of Demons, or whatever suits your own happiness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अथवा हे सीते! वानरराज सुग्रीव या राक्षसराज विभीषण पर अपना मन लगाओ (शरण लो), अथवा जैसा तुम्हें सुख मिले (वैसा करो)।
English Commentary
Shri Rama pushes the rejection to its limits by naming Sugriva and Vibhishana as potential guardians. This is devastating to Sita's dignity. By suggesting she could turn to the Vanara or Rakshasa kings, Shri Rama strips her of her exclusive status as the Queen of Ayodhya. It is the ultimate test of her devotion—if she is truly pure, she will choose death over another man, which is exactly what she proceeds to do.

यहाँ श्री राम की कठोरता की सीमा पार हो जाती है। वे सुग्रीव और विभीषण का भी नाम लेते हैं। यह सीता के सतीत्व पर प्रत्यक्ष आक्षेप नहीं, अपितु उनके 'निराश्रित' होने की घोषणा है। श्री राम कह रहे हैं कि उनके द्वार बंद हैं, अब सीता को समाज में जहाँ भी स्थान मिले, वे जा सकती हैं। यह सीता के स्वाभिमान को ललकारने वाला क्षण है।
