संप्राप्तमवमानं यस्तेजसा न प्रमार्जित ।
कस्तस्य पुरुषार्थोऽस्ति पुरुषस्याल्पतेजसः ॥६-११८-६॥
saṃprāptamavamānaṃ yastejasā na pramārjita |
kastasya puruṣārtho'sti puruṣasyālpatejasaḥ ॥6-118-6॥
Translation
What represents the manliness of a man of little spirit who does not wipe away the insult he has received through his own energy?

जो अल्पतेज वाला पुरुष प्राप्त हुए अपमान को अपने तेज (पराक्रम) से नहीं धो डालता, उसके पुरुषार्थ का क्या अर्थ है?
English Commentary
This is a rhetorical question defining the ethos of a warrior. A man lacking 'tejas' (spiritual/martial energy) who swallows an insult is considered worthless. Shri Rama validates his devastating war against Lanka as a necessary act to prove his worth as a man and a king. It reinforces the idea that the rescue was a moral imperative to erase the stain on his reputation.

यह क्षत्रिय धर्म का मूल मंत्र है। अपमान के साथ जीना मृत्यु से भी बदतर माना जाता है। श्री राम कहते हैं कि यदि वे सीता को मुक्त न कराते, तो उनका पौरुष निरर्थक होता। यहाँ श्री राम अपने कार्यों का औचित्य सिद्ध कर रहे हैं—कि यह युद्ध उन्होंने किसी व्यक्तिगत सुख के लिए नहीं, अपितु 'पुरुषार्थ' की परिभाषा को सार्थक करने के लिए लड़ा है।
