सा तदश्रुतपूर्वं हि जने महति मैथिली ।
श्रुत्वा भर्तृवचो रूक्षं लज्जया व्रीडिताभवत् ॥६-११९-२॥
sā tadaśrutapūrvaṃ hi jane mahati maithilī |
śrutvā bhartṛvaco rūkṣaṃ lajjayā vrīḍitābhavat ॥6-119-2॥
Translation
Hearing those harsh words of her husband, the like of which she had never heard before, in the midst of a vast assembly, Sita felt deeply ashamed and humiliated.
हिंदी अनुवाद
विशाल जनसमूह के बीच अपने पति के उन रूखे और पहले कभी न सुने गए वचनों को सुनकर मैथिली लज्जा से गड़ गईं।
English Commentary
The pain for Sita was twofold: the harshness of the words and the presence of a vast assembly ('Mahati Jane'). For a royal daughter-in-law and a chaste wife, being publicly humiliated is worse than death. The term 'Ashrutapurvam' (never heard before) indicates that Shri Rama had never spoken to her in a harsh tone until this moment, which amplifies the gravity of the situation.

सीता जी के लिए पीड़ा दोहरी थी—एक तो वचनों की कठोरता और दूसरा उस विशाल जनसमूह (महति जने) की उपस्थिति। एक राजवधू और पतिव्रता स्त्री के लिए सार्वजनिक रूप से अपमानित होना मृत्यु से भी बढ़कर है। 'अश्रुतपूर्वम्' शब्द यह दर्शाता है कि श्री राम ने आज तक उनके साथ कभी भी ऊँचे स्वर में बात नहीं की थी, जो इस स्थिति की गम्भीरता को और बढ़ा देता है।
