Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पपात ज्वलनं दीप्तं सर्वलोकस्य संनिधौ ।
ददृशुस्तां महाभागां प्रविशन्तीं हुताशनम् ॥६-११९-३१॥
papāta jvalanaṃ dīptaṃ sarvalokasya saṃnidhau |
dadṛśustāṃ mahābhāgāṃ praviśantīṃ hutāśanam ॥6-119-31॥
Translation
In the presence of all the worlds, she fell into the blazing fire. All witnessed that most fortunate lady entering the flames.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सम्पूर्ण लोकों (लोगों) के सामने वे प्रज्वलित अग्नि में गिर पड़ीं। सबने उन परम सौभाग्यशाली सीता को अग्नि में प्रवेश करते हुए देखा।
English Commentary
The use of the epithet 'Mahabhagam' (highly fortunate) is significant. Although she was entering the fire, she is called fortunate because she was about to prove her chastity and become an eternal ideal for womankind. 'In the presence of all worlds' signifies that this was not a private act but a public judgment.

यहाँ 'महाभागाम्' विशेषण का प्रयोग अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। यद्यपि वे अग्नि में जा रही थीं, किन्तु उन्हें 'परम सौभाग्यशाली' कहा गया, क्योंकि वे अपने सतीत्व को सिद्ध कर सम्पूर्ण नारी जाति के लिए आदर्श बनने जा रही थीं। 'सर्वलोकस्य सन्निधौ' का अर्थ है कि यह कोई गुप्त कृत्य नहीं, बल्कि एक सार्वजनिक न्याय था।
