Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रहस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा राजा राज्यहितैषिणः ।
सुखेप्सुः सुहृदाम् मध्ये व्याजहार स रावणः ॥६-१२-६॥
prahastasya vacaḥ śrutvā rājā rājyahite rataḥ । sukhepsuḥ suhṛdāṃ madhye vyājahāra sa rāvaṇaḥ ॥6-12-6॥
Translation
Hearing Prahasta's words, King Ravana, devoted to the welfare of the state and desiring happiness, spoke amidst his well-wishers.

प्रहस्त के वचन सुनकर, राज्य के हित में लगा हुआ और सुख चाहने वाला वह राजा रावण, अपने मित्रों (सुहृदों) के बीच बोला।
English Commentary
Ravana's Address. Interestingly, Ravana is described as 'rajyahite ratah' (intent on the welfare of the state). This suggests that from his perspective, he believes he is acting for Lanka's good. He addresses the 'suhridam' (friends/inner circle), seeking a solution for his happiness ('sukhepsu').

रावण का संबोधन। वाल्मीकि जी रावण को 'राज्यहिते रतः' (राज्य के हित में लगा हुआ) कहते हैं, जो उसकी राजा के रूप में जिम्मेदारी को दिखाता है (भले ही उसका तरीका गलत हो)। वह 'सुखेप्सुः' (सुख चाहने वाला) है, जो उसकी प्रेरणा है।
