Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततो हि दुर्मना रामः श्रुत्वैव वदतां गिरः ।
दध्यौ मुहूर्तं धर्मात्मा बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ॥६-१२०-१॥
tato hi durmanā rāmaḥ śrutvaiva vadatāṃ giraḥ |
dadhyau muhūrtaṃ dharmātmā bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ ॥6-120-1॥
Translation
Then, hearing the words of those who were speaking, the righteous Shri Rama became heavy-hearted. With eyes filled with tears, he meditated/reflected for a moment.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर, बोलने वाले (लोकपालों/लोगों) की बातें सुनकर धर्मात्मा श्रीश्री राम का मन उदास हो गया। वे आंसुओं से व्याकुल नेत्रों वाले होकर मुहूर्त भर के लिए ध्यानमग्न हो गए।
English Commentary
This verse captures the intense emotional conflict within Shri Rama amidst the Agnipariksha (fire ordeal) episode. Although he upholds Dharma sternly, the terms 'durmanā' (sad-minded) and 'bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ' (eyes agitated with tears) reveal his profound love and internal suffering. It humanizes the Avatar, showing that his adherence to duty was not due to a lack of feeling but in spite of deep personal pain.

सीता जी की अग्निपरीक्षा के प्रसंग में यह श्लोक श्रीश्री राम की मानवीय संवेदनाओं को दर्शाता है। यद्यपि वे धर्म की रक्षा के लिए कठोर निर्णय ले रहे थे, तथापि 'दुर्मना' (उदास मन) और 'बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः' (आंसुओं से भरे नेत्र) यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि उनके भीतर प्रेम और करुणा का सागर ठाठें मार रहा था। वे लोकापवाद और धर्म के द्वंद्व में फंसकर गंभीर चिंतन में लीन हो गए।
