हीनं रतिगुणैः सर्वैरभिहन्तारमाहवे ।
त्यजन्ति नृपतिं सेनाः संविभ्राम्तं नरेखराम् ॥६-१२५-९॥
hīnaṃ ratiguṇaiḥ sarvairabhihantāramāhave |
tyajanti nṛpatiṃ senāḥ saṃvibhrāntaṃ nareśvaram ॥6-125-9॥
Translation
Armies abandon a king who is devoid of all endearing qualities, who only drives them to be killed in battle, and who is confused/agitated in judgment.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जो राजा प्रेम और स्नेह आदि गुणों से हीन होता है, जो केवल युद्ध में मरवाना जानता है और जो (निर्णय लेने में) भ्रमित रहता है, सेनाएं उस राजा को त्याग देती हैं।
English Commentary
This is a vital maxim of military psychology. Soldiers sacrifice their lives only for a king who shows affection ('ratigunaih'). A ruler who is harsh or confused ('samvibhrantam') is deserted in times of crisis. Shri Rama warns Vibhishana not to repeat Ravana's mistakes and to win the hearts of his subjects and soldiers.

यह सैन्य-मनोविज्ञान का एक महत्वपूर्ण सूत्र है। सैनिक उसी राजा के लिए प्राण देते हैं जो उनसे स्नेह करता है ('रतिगुणैः')। जो राजा केवल कठोरता दिखाता है या भ्रमित ('संविभ्रान्तं') रहता है, उसे संकट काल में अकेला छोड़ दिया जाता है। श्री राम विभीषण को चेतावनी दे रहे हैं कि वे रावण जैसी गलतियां न करें और अपनी प्रजा व सैनिकों का दिल जीतें।
