Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वसेत् सह सपत्नेन क्रुद्धेन आशी विषेण च ।
न तु मित्र प्रवादेन सम्वस्च्चत्रुणा सह ॥६-१६-२॥
vasetsaha sapatnena kruddhenāśīviṣeṇa vā । na tu mitrapravādena saṃvasecchatrusevinā ॥6-16-2॥
Translation
'One might dwell with an enemy or a furious snake, but one should never dwell with one who claims to be a friend but serves the enemy.'
हिंदी अनुवाद
(रावण बोला—) 'शत्रु के साथ या क्रुद्ध विषैले सांप (आशीविष) के साथ भी रहना (संभव) है, लेकिन मित्र कहलाने वाले (मित्रप्रवाद) और शत्रु की सेवा करने वाले (शत्रुसेवी) व्यक्ति के साथ कभी नहीं रहना चाहिए।'
English Commentary
The accusation of treachery. Ravana equates dissent with betrayal. He claims it's safer to live with a snake than a 'mitrapravada' (so-called friend) who aligns with the enemy's interests ('shatrusevina'). This reflects Ravana's inability to distinguish between loyalty to the king and loyalty to the truth.

रावण का आरोप। वह विभीषण पर 'गद्दार' (Traitor) होने का आरोप लगाता है। रावण के लिए असहमति ही शत्रुता है। वह विभीषण की तुलना 'आस्तीन के सांप' से करता है जो मित्र बनकर शत्रु का भला चाहता है।
