Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावनम् पापक्र्माणम् तथा त्वम् कर्तुमर्हसि ।
सेतुरत्र यथा बद्ध्येथा पश्येम ताम् पुरीम् ॥६-२-९॥
rāvaṇaṃ pāpakarmāṇaṃ tathā tvaṃ kartumarhasi । setumatra yathā baddhvā yathā paśyāma tāṃ purīm ॥6-2-9॥
Translation
You act in such a way regarding the sinful Ravana; devise a means so that we can build a bridge here and see that city.
हिंदी अनुवाद
पापकर्मा रावण का वध आप उसी प्रकार कर सकेंगे, (इसलिए) आप ऐसा उपाय कीजिये जिससे हम यहाँ समुद्र पर पुल (सेतु) बांधकर उस पुरी (लंका) को देख सकें।
English Commentary
Here lies the pivotal strategic proposal: Build a Bridge (Setu). Sugriva pragmatically shifts the focus from 'How to cross?' to 'Build a bridge'. He implies that Shri Rama's grief is hindering the engineering solution. The condition is set: If we can bridge the ocean and just 'see' the city, the rest is history.

समस्या के समाधान की ओर पहला ठोस कदम। सुग्रीव 'सेतु' (Bridge) बनाने का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। यह श्री रामायण में सेतु निर्माण का पहला स्पष्ट उल्लेख है। सुग्रीव जानते हैं कि पूरी सेना हनुमान की तरह उड़ नहीं सकती। उनका तर्क है: 'हमें बस लंका देखने का प्रबंध कर दो (पहुँचने का), रावण का वध तो निश्चित है।'
